The Institute for Labour Law and Industrial Relations in the European Union (IAAEU) was established as a public foundation in 1983 and is funded by the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate. While being a public foundation, the IAAEU is also a research institute of the University of Trier and is situated in the heart of the Petrisberg technology park on Campus 2 Building H. The mission of the interdisciplinary research institute is to study labour law and the economic and socio-political conditions for industrial relations in the European Union.

The Institute has an expansive library containing a unique collection of monographs, loose-leaf editions, periodicals, microforms, and digital media. The collection covers international and national labour laws for European Union member and non-member nations, labour relations, labour economics, and personnel economics in the European Union and the United States. Research at the institute takes place in close cooperation with the departments of both directors, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Schlachter (International und European Labour Law and Civil Law) and Prof. Dr. Laszlo Goerke (Personnel Economics).
